Andy Donato was born in 1937 in Toronto, Ontario. He grew up working in a grocery store, owned by his parents and graduated from Danforth Technical High School in 1955. Donato started his career as a graphic designer and later worked his way to become an editorial artist by 1965. Donato later became one of the few journalists from the Toronto Telegram to help form the Toronto Sun (after the Toronto Telegram became defunct), where he continues to be an editorial artist to this day. Donato has won many awards including: The National Newspaper-1976, Best World Editorial Cartoon, Montreal Salon of Cartoons-1980. In Addition to working on his watercolour paintings, Donato is currently designing and making putters for his game of golf.
