Butenko was born in 1953 in the village of Podvirna, Chernivtsy Oblast in the Ukraine. He graduated from the Lviv Institute of Applied and Decorative Arts in 1979. Butenko is among the most famous of contemporay Ukrainian artists and he has a distinguished selection of landscapes, cityscapes and nudes.
