David Kellam Brown

David Kellam Brown spent most of his adult life as an engineer; after forty years in that profession, Brown suffered a series of lay-offs and in 2001 he began studying what he calls his “primal calling” – creating art. At this point he began his self-directed study, primarily using art books, magazines, and websites to train himself, and he attended various artists’ workshops. He recently began working on a Master of Fine Arts degree in Illustration from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Brown also teaches life drawing and painting as an adjunct professor at the Art Institute of Dallas.

Brown, who often signs his creations “Kellam,” mostly paints and draws, although he does create some small-scale sculptures, depending on his inspiration. As an artist, Brown creates art “primarily for the joy of the experience.” Part of the experience, a part that is close to his heart, is thinking of viewer’s responses to his work. As such, his art is a method of evoking emotions and responses. “I create images, moods, action, and compositions that inspire curiosity and have personal resonance and humor,” Brown explains. Brown has been invited to exhibit his art around the South and Southwest and is a Signature Member of the Texas Visual Arts Association.
