One of Hawaii's most well known artists, Kasprzycki had the very first gallery in the upcountry town -- 23 years ago. In the interim, Makawao has experienced a profound art revival. "I like the fact that there are so many galleries in this little town," he says. "It brings more people interested in art to Makawao. And just look at how diverse the art is." Inside the walls of Avalene, you'll find Kasprzycki's signature, brilliant florals and the romantic evening city scenes he reffers to as "Nightscapes." A long time resident of Hawaii, he moved from Lahaina to the slopes of Haleakala where his studio looks like a purple painted temple. He creates slashed, oversize canvases. Of his location, he says: "I saw Upcountry and that was that."
