Michael Molnar

Michael Joseph Molnar (1948-2012) was an American Postwar and Contemporary artist. When Molnar paints, he didn't see landscapes or objects. He saw shapes.

Molnar, who was originally from Hazleton, Pennsylvania, has operated his Hudsondale studio for more than 25 years. He taught sculpture, painting and drawing at Luzerne County Community College, where he also began his art studies, earning an associate's degree in commercial art in 1970. He continued his studies at the Maryland Institute College of Art. There he worked with Joseph Sheppard who taught him how to observe his subject matter and how to break it down in a simplified way.

Molnar said he could find something interesting in even the most seemingly mundane subject matter — grapes for example. He's able to make interesting compositions with the spherical shapes. It's also a challenge to capture the translucency and transparency of the fruit.
