Peter Hildick

Peter Hildick has been passionate about art and nature since he was very young, but people convinced him that he could never make a secure living as an artist. Instead, Hildick decided to join the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Navy and only drew in his free time, although he occasionally sold pieces of his art for “a couple of pints.” He worked in the Navy for more than two decades, and upon leaving he began his work as a communications engineer in the defense industry. He still works in this industry, drawing in his spare time. Even without self-promotion or a career as an artist, Hildick was noticed by The Framing Centre in Plymouth in 1996 and was soon picked up by Washington Green, which began publishing his work in 1997. Since then, he has also participated in numerous exhibitions, including a few showings at the world-renowned Halcyon Gallery.

Because Hildick is dedicated to his work in the defense industry, he is unable to travel the world for inspiration. Instead, he takes advantage of every resource available locally to find inspiration for his nature- and wildlife-based artwork. He watches films, studies books and photographs, and visits the wildlife park near his home, Dartmoor National Park, where he has been able to be in direct contact with animals such as tigers and puma cubs. These exciting and exotic animals inspire his monochromatic drawings. Hildick uses the simplest of tools -- the graphic pencil -- to create the most intricate and elaborate images. The techniques he has picked up on his own rival those of even the most studious artists. With his undeniable talent and years of experience, it's no wonder that Hildick’s artwork is collected all across the United Kingdom and around the world.
