Clarence Sinclair Bull (1895-1979) was an American photographer best known for his portraits of Hollywood icons. He was an expert in the technical aspects of photography, including lighting, retouching, and printing. Born on May 22, 1896 in Sun River, MT, he won his first photography competition at the age of 14. After graduating from the University of Michigan in 1918, Bull moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in the film industry. He worked as an assistant cameraman at Metro Pictures, where he shot stills of actors during production breaks. After Metro Pictures merged with Goldwyn, he became head of the stills department at the new MGM in 1924. From 1929 to 1941, he worked primarily with Greta Garbo, but during his 40 year career at MGM, he also photographed Clark Gable, Katharine Hepburn, Grace Kelly, and Elizabeth Taylor. Bull died on June 8, 1979 in Los Angeles, CA. Today, his works are held in the collections The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, and the National Portrait Gallery in London, among others.
