Daniel Gerr was born in Yugoslavia in 1957. Moving as a youth to Russia, he studied at the Kremlin Art Academy, and by 1977, he had immigrated to Israel. There, he studied at the Betzalel Academy of Art. His work is influenced by ancient buildings that have been covered by the signs and symbols of modern society. How this juxtaposition affects the ever-evolving street scenes that develop as modern day life goes on is a subject Gerr explores deeply in his work. He now lives in Jaffa, an ancient port city in Israel associated with the biblical stories of Solomon, Jonah, and Saint Peter.
