Sam Shendi

Artist Sam Shendi was born in a small village in northern Egypt, and has had a passion for artistic creation since childhood. Shendi attended the Fine Art University in Cairo from 1992 to 1997, where he specialized in sculpture. While at school, Shendi also held a number of creativity-based positions, including fashion designer and interior designer. After Shendi completed his studies, he opened his own interior design company in Hurgarda, Egypt. Eventually, Shendi decided that he wanted to make art his full-time profession, so he moved to the United Kingdom in 2000 to pursue his dream. Shendi continued to work as a designer while living in North Yorkshire; the money he earned helped support him as he perfected his sculpting technique. In 2006, Shendi partnered with Washington Green to produce his work for an eager audience.

Shendi believes that art “is life, and it is the emotions we share,” and so he attempts to capture single moments in time that often go unnoticed. Shendi works with his hands, and creates movement and form from shapes and shadows. Shendi’s use of negative space is particularly captivating since “the spaces around and within my sculptures act as my pencil.”
