Hugo Sandoval

Born and raised in the Caribbean, Hugo Sandoval has become a bold and prolific artist in the United States. Inspired by the fantastical carnivals and vibrant art of his hometown, Sandoval has developed an interesting style of painting that expresses something from deep within him while drawing an emotional response from the viewer. Composed of geometric shapes emphasized with vivacious colors, Sandoval’s paintings depict moons and suns, landscapes, and ethereal planetary shapes. The intriguing images often mimic ancient hieroglyphs, as if the artist playfully presenting a riddle that the viewer is encouraged to decode. These shifting, shimmering shapes are highlighted through Sandoval’s bold use of color, warm hues, and tropical feel, as well as the layering and textures he utilizes to create depth and a new level of energy in his paintings.

Using acrylic or oil paints, Sandoval primarily creates Abstract or Abstract-Figurative art, but he also is influenced by the movements of Cubism and Primitivism. With these and the legacy of his Caribbean ancestry in mind, his artwork rarely falls into one artistic category; instead, he utilizes the differences and similarities in these many influences to create unique, powerful paintings. His work is more about the process of creating than having the end result being of a certain school of art. As a result, Hugo Sandoval is an unparalleled and inspiring artist.
