Born in Germany in 1934, Arie Azene immigrated to Israel at a young age and grew up in Tel Aviv. He studied at the Bezalel Acadamy in Jerusalem and the Avni Institute in Tel Aviv, before moving to Paris for advanced studies at the Grande Chaumiere. As Azene’s reputation and skill grew, he eventually joined the “New Horizons” group—a collection of artists that aimed to free Israeli painting from its local character and literary associations, and bring it into the sphere of contemporary European art. During this time Azene was heavily influenced by Yosef Zaritsky, the group’s dominant figure. But where Zaritsky was known as a “colorist”, Azene exhibits a clear inclination towards merging the color structure around two complimentary hues, usually close to one another. Preferring various combinations of gray, Azene constructs his structures in a two-dimensional way, similar to Zaritsky’s earliest abstract work. During his career as a Master artist he has exhibited in international shows, Museums and Galleries in Israel, Europe and the USA. Many of Azene's artworks can be found in important private collections.
