Fascinated by the changing nature of light around his childhood Bay Area home, artist Joe Hillman has been fixated on the transformative power of light ever since. Eschewing formal training for being “too restrictive and canonical,” Hillman remains largely self-taught, and thrives in his state of “self-imposed freedom.” About his work, Hillman has said, “I realized I could spend a lifetime painting the same scene over and over, in different seasons under different conditions, and yet not be painting the same scene. It was a magical realization!” His work is collected extensively throughout the world, and can be found in various private and corporate collections.
